STADIUM® ECO

STADIUM ECOApproximately 5% of the world’s total CO2 emission is related to cement and concrete production.

STADIUM® ECO was developed to provide on-line expert guidance for the optimum selection of supplementary cementing materials (SCMs) to be used in concrete in order to reduce the carbon footprint of new construction projects or for the repair and rehabilitation of existing structures. Materials used to replace cement are primarily silica fume (FS), fly ash (FA) and ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS).

This web-based computer software application includes the following modules:

  • Increase SCM content – This module is used to search the built-in mixture database and find the one with the highest SCM content that complies with project specifications, applicable codes and standards and environmental conditions.
  • Mixture database consultation – This module is used to find the expected range of proportions and properties for a given set of specifications. Typically it is used to verify if project specifications can be met with a concrete made with a given SCM content.
  • Theoretical calculations – This module is used to calculate from the database content some key concrete properties based on water-binder ratio, SCM type and replacement level. Up to five different scenarios can be compared and the results are expressed graphically as ratios of a reference scenario.
  • Cost calculator – This module is used to calculate the impact of cement replacement by SCMs on the unit cost of concrete.
  • GHG calculator – This module is used to calculate the impact of cement replacement by SCM on the embodied greenhouse gas content of the binder, and by extension of the concrete.
  • Appearance database consultation – This module is used to get information about the influence of SCM addition on the visual aspect of concrete. It features a database of slab pictures cast with different concrete mixtures that can be searched based on the SCM type, replacement level and water-binder ratio.

Benefits of using SCMs are:

  • Reduction in the quantity of industrial waste
  • Recycling of a waste product
  • Reduction of cement in concrete
  • Reduction of CO2 emissions
  • Better workability
  • Long-term strength & greater durability
